By the way Honey - honey is another of my "secret ingredients"!
I always assumed Bay Leaves (which I don't put in) was the standard ingredient everyone put in and that I was magnificently original with my cloves!
Bread Sauce is one of my HUGE vital foods (like avocados, Clamato Juice, Aromat, Kent cob nuts).
If I live to be over 100, please all remember this when I'm asked "what is your secret of longevity?" which they always ask (SOO annoying) because I will have forgotten by then.

Please dont ever be tempted to put honey into cranberry sauce.
I have no idea how it happens, but the honey flavour is magnified by a thousand and overwhelms.

My "secret" ingredients are mostly lovage, tonka beans, cassia and caraway. (in general, not for bread sauce)

Honey I can barely find a recipe without them.

However, Mrs Beeton started off with no cloves, but amended it in later editions, and Eliza Acton was a non clover too

Whatever you put in, the secret is to let it stand.
JK2006 No Honey - cloves. I never knew anybody else used them in bread sauce. Also Chicken Stock Cubes from Knorr. Cream. Butter. Breadcrumbs. Onions. Garlic.

One of my guilty pleasures every year is GROUSE! A brace of well hung stinky grouse with my home made bread sauce (my secret ingredient - cloves), game chips or roast potatoes, peas or sprouts and Puligny Montrachet.
This year - no grouse. Shortage of grouse. Where are the GRICE???
My drug dealer for this rare addiction swears she will have some Friday.
She'd better!!!!

Cloves are not a secret ingredient. They are in every recipe for bread sauce I have ever seen.

Did you mean capers?
