I wonder if there will be rush against the church for compensation from those thrashed seeing most say it had long term damaging effects upon them.

I still have a slightly deformed finger from when I slightly turned my hand as the errant English Master, quite puce in the face and going back several paces and then taking a running leap at this terrified child as he thrashed a cane down upon my palm. Always 4 times.

I never cried though but I did almost pass out once. Made no difference. .

The church is dying, I will not be surprised if more and more churches will be turned into Mosques or flats.

JK2006 I'm no expert in these matters Jo. It took me decades before I worked out that my Headmaster might have got sexual gratification out of beating me. And links between religious justification and sex are very weird if you don't belong to the specific religion nor its bizarre offshoots. I just think media and memory prefer to include sex if it/they possibly can. And think Matthew's reasoned and sensible view of the 2017 allegations compared to this 2024 situation say a lot about society, morality and the media.
Jo I blame the Church for my brother’s death, says Zimbabwean sister of UK child abuse victim

...
The British barrister had moved to Zimbabwe with his wife and four children from Winchester in England in 1984 to work with an evangelistic organisation.

This was two years after an investigation revealed he had subjected boys in the UK, many of whom he had met at Christian holiday camps run by a charity he chaired that was linked to the Church, to traumatic physical, psychological and sexual abuse.

The 1982 report, prepared by Anglican clergyman Mark Ruston, about the canings said "the scale and severity of the practice was horrific", with accounts of boys beaten so badly they bled, with one describing how he needed to wear nappies until his wounds scabbed over.
...

Coltart feels it is not just the Church that is to blame, and suggests other institutions in the UK need to face up to their failure to warn people in Zimbabwe.

He commended the Church of England’s recent Makin report, saying it "left no stone unturned". The report estimates that around "85 boys and young men were physically abused in African countries, including Zimbabwe".
...

Even if Smyth wasn't formally accused of paedophilia or sexual abuse before the Makin report (and is it certain he wasn't?), I don't see how excessive canings, also in view of his liking for unnecessary nudity, naked trampolining, etc., can't have been being done for sexual gratification and therefore was sexual abuse.
Jo That's an interesting read.

"All the recipients of the beatings were said to be in their late teens or early twenties. It is unclear whether any were under the age of 18, something of potential legal significance."

From the Makin review, October 2024:

... It has taken longer than anyone would have wished to produce the Review. It has been important to do justice to victims, including by listening carefully and accurately recording their detailed accounts. A very significant amount of evidence has been generated, covering a period of some 40 years, from many more contributors (and previously unknown victims) than anticipated. New sources of evidence, running to many thousands of pages, emerged in the course of the Review. The sheer extent of the trauma generated by John Smyth required, in our judgment, that meeting with victims and other key contributors took place in person – a process hindered and delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The complexity of the subject-matter and the sheer extent of the abuse perpetrated exceeded the expectations of the commissioning authority such that the original timetable was shown to be unrealistic. And the many parallel lines of investigations linked to the Review, including by the police, generated requirements on the Review team to support and assist. We deeply regret that delay and the additional distress it may have caused John Smyth's victims.
