Solihull Exile Well Jk I have seen them in one Supermarket,and only then in the season..also very expensive compared to similar veg.
Really about habits,people's diets were strictly controlled during the communist times,especially the CCCP region.Everybody tends to grow the Soviet perscribed veg in their kitchen gardens.
Certain veg are available here,that are not easy to come by in England,and other staples are hard to find here..for example Celery.Only seen one guy sell it,at our local market...he stuck a label on it saying it was an aphrodisiac! It wasn't of course LOL.
Chestnuts are the same,only one tree in my town,and that's in the botanical garden.
Romania is a tad different,sprouts in Bucharest in season,and also chestnuts,but again not all year round as in Blightey.
Oh well,I may well be returning to the UK for a few months next year.Just hope my Mother doesn't put me off sprouts before I've had a chance to experiment myself first:P
JK2006 SE - I can't believe SPROUTS are not available there. Whyever not? You have cabbages - Sprouts are simply smaller versions.

Polenta is known as Mamaliga in this region.However lack of sprouts means we'd struggle to replicate it.
Wonder what will follow? Of course Sprouts do seem to be taking on a new lease of life within this forum.

Polenta with Sprout Pesto.

Allow 2 sprouts per serving.

Make half a pan of polenta using only salt and pepper as stock. If using quick cook polenta add to boiling water , turn it off and stir until of a porrige consistency.

Add parmesan when its cooling , scoop it out of the pan and lay it as a paste onto a flat cooking tray.

Whilst its cooling, prepare the sprouts(2 per person as above and slice along with a shallot for each pair.

Cooking, but not fry, in a rich olive oil, until soft.

Slice the cold firm polenta and griddle with more oil, and serve the warm sprout sauce over the top, and a sprinkling of more cheese.

I tried herbs with them, it didn`t work, neither flavour stood out.
