Topic History of: Seaside towns - declining Max. showing the last 5 posts - (Last post first)

Not even wildlife and trees are safe in Dorset. It seems to be the same pattern every year; school holiday, then arson occurs. We know kids get bored during the 6-week holiday, but why are kids still getting 6 weeks off these days? Only a small percentage get Summer jobs or even do anything productive. Just give them 31 days off throughout. Kids get more holidays than their hardworking parents. I doubt many farm labouring apart from burning them.

It's the same, pretty much up and down the country.
High streets are filled with the same chain stores, not many independent shops around, and hotels filled with illegals; jobs are scarce these days.
Primark in Brum has a Greggs and Next in Southampton has a Costa.
All county and city councils are on the verge of bankruptcy. Most shops I walk past are pretty shop fronts, even second-hand media shops are also vape shops.
Not forgetting each town is full of Turkish barbers and nail bars, but it's funny how they never have any customers, yet they can afford the high rent and rates that previous shop owners couldn't. The central government can't wait every few months when the owners buy expensive cars; it's the VAT.
Old BHS, Debenhams, empty shop units and pub buildings are sitting on the high streets, going from wreck to ruin. There's a street in Plymouth that is just filled with takeaways like kebabs, pizza, Chinese and nothing else; it's one of many streets in UK towns.
Even charity shops are in decline. |

Surprised to see historic Stratford-upon-Avon added to the declining towns list!

Do muslim women actually LIKE wearing the burka and being covered head to foot? Only yesterday I heard the latest from Afghansitan is that the Taliban are now insisting women cover one eye as well, leaving just the other to see through the veil/burka. Yet many of these women are coming to the UK and other western nations and still walk around like in downtown Kabul. I don't believe many of these women really want to be walking around like this, certainly not those who live in the Western culture. So why do they? Under threat of the men in their families even while living here?
I suppose you would like it as an alternative to being shunned, battered or raped, yes.

Well that is a different issue really and I am sure very complicated for the women involved. To discard practices you are told are essential from when a small child, can't be straightforward.
It wouldn't make sense if the main reason they fled, e.g, Afghanistan was to be free of their burka and they continued wearing it in the UK; but I suspect there is usually more to it than this Rich...

Possibly that - in conjunction with The US and the Taliban - we have fucked around in their country and made it a living hell hole.
You want less burkas on the streets - let's start at home. |
