Where to live, has changed over recent years!
Not just near friends and family, any more.
Key factors:-
1. Biggest is - quality of life. Age too.
2. Nowadays, many enjoy working from home; less hassle/travel.
3. However communication now, is fantastic, free/instant money transfer also.
4. A personal preference, be near local civilisation, with a parking space!
5. See Europe often - Africa too/54 countries.
DOVER tomorrow - the 3am departure will be decidedly labour intensive....

Staus symbols have been replaced by trends and fads. I bought my house cheap because it's rustic, the estate agent said it's a do a upper which I disagree with, it has character and everything is in intact. I am out in rural-ish West Country. We have all the essentials and minimal dust collectors.
House prices are getting very silly in the UK, in the U.S you can get for about 3 houses paid for outright, for the same price what you are paying for one mortage just in the UK. However, it depends on the area and condition in the States.
£26k will get you a garage with a parking space. Over in the U.S $26k can you get a small family home.
I have no idea what Bishop Auckland is like but you can buy a house using one year worth of basic salary.
