It reminds me of the later episodes of The Prisoner with Patrick McGoohan when the writers had clearly run out of plot ideas and they kept putting him in sillier and sillier situations (he's a cowboy! he's Sherlock Holmes! he's inhabiting someone else's body!) until the viewers just got bored and switched off.

It's becoming terribly one dimensional with Alex Drake irritatingly bleating "this is all a dream" every three seconds and ruining the plots.
Now I remember that was what was often wrong with Life On Mars - too much concentration on the fantasy and not enough on gripping plots.
