The poll tax protest was hijacked by anarchists who took advantage of the event. It was not the violence which brought about change. That was just the superficial banner headline stuff.
It worked ! The Tories announced (within days) that they would scrap the tax as soon as they had worked out what to do next ! |

Violent protest is illegal, and undesirable, and therefore cannot be ignored. That does not make it right. The situation under an opressive regime where the people have no freedom of speech or right to vote against their government is quite different to the situation in the UK (for now).

No differnce though, is there? If the Poll Tax riots had been peaceful (as were the anti-war demos) then the Government would simply have ignorred them.
