A great deal of it has become chainstore hell - the Chelsea Drugstore of old is now a McDonald's - but familiar landmarks like the Chelsea Cinema, Waitrose, Peter Jones, Picasso's cafe, the Vivienne Westwood shop out in World's End, etc. are all still present and correct. |

I used to be there all the time when we launched The Rocky Horror Show at the Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court, then the Pheasantry in King's Road (my idea) and then further down... happy days 1973.
So my jaw dropped when I drove past this lovely but brand new square last weekend. |

Gosh that takes me back. The last time I was in Chelsea was around 20 years ago. I've not had cause to go there since. I bet much of it is unrecognisable now. |

Didn't it used to be part of Chelsea Barracks?
Anyway, the land got sold off and they built up the new shopping centre over a timescale of I think 3-4 years.
As far as the rest of Chelsea Barracks is concerned (i.e. the main complex further down Chelsea Bridge Road) I understand that's also due to be sold off and converted into luxury flats, presuming there's anyone left in London who can afford them. |
