veritas I tend to agree here and actually, I find the idea of "looking" at a photograph to be a crime quite a bizarre aspect. Even though these may be horrible pics. I mean actually just looking and making that a crime is pretty weird if you ask me.

I know the logic used-that by "looking" or downloading is creating the crime but I reckon that is just a load of hype. Most of these child porn sites are supposed to be run by US or Russian crooks and they just use the same old stuff time and time again.

Actually procuring kids and producing new porn of course should be a crime that carries serious penalties..but even with adult porn the internet is awash with sites that are just rip-offs of other site's productions.

As to JK saying don't trust what you are hearing straight off-I had dined with a fairly well know barrister who specilizes in criminal defences just a week ago-and he reckons up to 45% of police either lie or exagerate in the witness box.

The police learnt long ago how to manipulate the system.
They are ruled by statistics and want to be "shown" to be doing the job and achieving something (but very rarely are).

So ... chase-up a 30 year old case and there is little chance that there will be any evidence left (and highly unlikely that the defendant will even remember where he / she was !)

Then there are those wonderful "terror" cases - lots of extra powers and you can keep people locked-up UNTIL you've invented some "evidence" !

Also persue motorists ... motoring offences do not exist until they are solved - no one goes into a police station and says Ha Ha - I just did 40 in a 30 zone and got away with it, so there is no "unsolved" crime, is there?) However ... when the police catch someone speeding they "create" a crime and "solve" it at the same time - which is excellent for their statistics.

EG -
Town has 2 burglaries - naturally no one will ever get caught - clear-up rate = 0%
Town has 2 burglaries, police then persue 8 motorists - clear up rate = 80%

VOILA !
BR Point taken JK

Why is our JUSTICE system in such a mess ?

Why are those who are meant to be protecting us from crime actually the CRIMINALS !!

It defies belief.

Has it always been like this and basically as a society we have never questioned it before ?

The Drug gangs run the streets in London yet the Police never stop them. All of us have been offered drugs as we walk down main streets in London I am sure.....how do these people get away with this ( and their masters )

Yet the Police spend loads of time chasing and harassing innocent people who from time to time come into their clutches.

Only in the last 7 days the papers have reported on APPLE CORE prosecutions ( which is a growing crime area - the Police are arresting people who are eating and then charging them with dropping litter - often with no evidence - they offer a caution but they capture the DNA - Fingerprints and get a Clear Up Rate ! )

The way in which New Labour has organised the Police must have something to do with it.

The Police seem to get more pay if they attack celebs ( Pete and Amy are ill - they need help not to be followed around by the police ) and ignore real criminals ( They did NOTHING about Ian Huntley for instance - yet at the same time they were chasing other celebs around )

It stinks.
Mart I know little about the case, but it is quite obvious that bad "history" etc , would inevitably be found on his hard drive as a result of his job.
JK2006 BR - NEVER fall for the "he's pleaded guilty so he must be" attitude!

I refused to plead guilty and got 7 years instead of 2.

Lawyers, judges, police, CPS all LOVE guilty pleas by innocent men or women and try to push for them all the time.

The argument is - "you may be innocent but you will be found guilty so plead and get half the sentence".

I HATE it!
