My feelings exactly - relationships should be strongly discouraged (it can put awful pressure upon the student and make them feel terribly uncomfortable - if I sleep with teacher could I get better marks?) but it shouldn't be criminal. |

Superb post Denise - totally agree.
Having a relationship with a student should be "gross misconduct" and instant dismissal.
However, it should not be a criminal offence.
It is ludicrous to criminalise teachers for what is a professional offence.
This could spread to ALL professions - eg Any boss of any company should not be able to bed the new secretary who is 16 etc. because that is an even bigger breach of trust because a SALARY is involved.
I think New Labour are trying to criminalise ALL of us - and change the laws by stealth.
As I read on one site - Teachers can wait until the student leaves their school - or they could change schools if they wished to have a relationship.
We are talking about teachers age 21 and students age 18 in many instances - which is hardly any difference in age gap. In fact in some cases the student is more mature than the teacher !!!
The continued witchunts by New Labour have made the public start to question these awful laws.
ITV has a programme about this - TONIGHT. |

Maybe there should be a ruling within the teachers union that having a relationship with a pupil is unethical, the same as for doctors with patients. This would not involve the law, but the teacher could be disciplined with the profession, and appropriate action taken.
Pupils aged 16 and up have the legal right to give consent. If the government say they cannot have a relationship with a teacher, the surely the pupils are being denied their legal rights. It is not good to have contradictions and exceptions within the law. |

Good to see "our debate" now being taken up by a teacher's union.
We forgot in our debate ( see below ) that in the UK the age of consent for teachers is now 18 years old - which means if they form a relationship with someone of 17 or 18 they can be PUT ON THE SEX OFFENDERS register and arrested as a paedophile.
This is once again NEW LABOUR messing around with law to try and criminalise many thousands of young 20 year olds ( Many teachers are in the early to mid 20s )
I totally agree with the Teachers Unions that this law should be changed OR the age of consent for ALL should be raised to 18 years old.
I would also say to anyone considering teaching - dont. NEW LABOUR have demonised teaching as a profession - where many teachers now have their careers ruined by false allegations - of both sexes.
It is time for us ALL to stand up to the Government about sex and laws of consent because they are using them as a political weapon, |
