Sparrow hawks. One lived in Belmarsh Prison when I had a cell there on the exercise yard and one day I was looking out of the window and SPLAT - a hawk shot out of the sky straight at a pigeon's head, killing it instantly and then ripping it apart and devouring it while it twitched. |

Interesting.
We hardly ever see sparrows in this part of the world any more. In Paris they are still very common I noted.
My morning alarm has been a sparrow hawk for quite a few months now, which could explain this problem, although they mainly seem to eat blue tits and incredibly they can take a pigeon completely out of the sky in an instant for lunch. A very cruel bird, they pluck their prey whilst it is still alive and I often find the circles of feathers all over the place where the hawk has lunched.
I am still intrigued by a bird from my hols that I have failed to identify. It was definetly a falcon, but it was the fastest one I had ever seen and smaller than our kestrels.
Whilst on birds, I can never see an owl as a bird. They seem to be an independent species to me, more like a flying sort of dog!
A barn owl hit my windscreen once on the M25, it scared the life out of me! (cracked the screen as well)It was like a ghost and inevitably became one that second. |

There's a white sparrow (not albino) on p3 of the Mail this morning. |
