Mart An interesting point this, and I don`t like to comment on threads of this nature and normally do not, however, the first lesson of this sort was taught to me personally at exactly the age of five years old, when the lesson was re-taught to me by the same person when I was six, I had completely forgotten what I had been taught as I did obviously not want to know and being told what "mum and dad" did to make me, made me feel sick.

Now , I must point out at this point, that for some reason, this lesson was consistantly given by a child psychiatrist as in those days, it had beed decided by some Doctors that asthma was a "disease of the mind" that I was suffering from as a kid.(absolute and proven crap now of course)

The "psyco" lady visited me again when I was eight and delivered the usual sex eduacation speel,(sex education?lung illness? what was wrong with these people??) asking me if I remembered where babies came from, and I once again, said "belly button", as I could not recall what I had been taught, as I was not interested in the teachings.

My point is that at five years old, I honestly believe is a waste of time teaching this subject to kids, there is no point in teaching it until curiosity appears naturally to a young person.
JK2006 I'm sorry but I believe education as early as possible is vital.
We teach babies how to eat food and quickly show them how NOT to eat food, how to avoid poison and choking and so on.
Why is sex any way different? Like eating and drinking, it is a bodily function, some good, some bad, some wise, some foolish.
Why on earth do some humans believe sex is wrong?
It is neither right nor wrong, neither good nor bad.

Like food and drink, it is what we do with it that needs teaching.

Totally right Zoo. Its actually relationship education. Somethin that in my opinion should be encouraged. Unless those who oppose want more kids brought up by single parents? The story they are talking about is actually a spin by the media. The same media some her are very quick to condemn when it suits. Chillaaaax people.
emmapeelfanclub I too think this is a little too absurd. At around the age of 10, yes, but 5 is way too early since children remain rather innocent before the age of 10 in their beliefs and outlook. I think had I been told where I came from at the age of 5, I would had been confused and it would had stolen my naive innocence. By the age of ten, one is more curious and open and with adolescence around the corner, it makes more sense to introduce sex education then. I think then to inflict 5 year olds to sex education is the earliest opportunity for them to start being introduced to what Paedophilia is and try and strike fear within them.

Fact is, no matter when sex education is introduced, kids will start experimenting sexually anyway by the time they are 12 or 13. There is nothing one can do about that.

Having said that, I left school in 1988 and we had NO real sex education at all. We had this farcical and patronising "lesson" called PSD - Personal and Social Development and it wasn't until the final month of school they finally got round to sex education and the teacher had to give this rehearsed spiel that made her look stupid because about 75% of the kids in my class had already lost their virginities. They made obscene noises and gestures and the teacher actually walked out, embarrassed and humiliated. The following week, we had a visit from the local family planning clinic, and 2 weeks after that, we finished school. And that was the total extent of our sex education back in 1988.
