BR Probably both reasons.

Makes you realise how the UK is in such a mess.
veritas I read Ian Blair said those doing community service penalties should wear uniforms !!

And this guy was the head of the cops ?

the reason he gave was that the public doesn't think enough is being done !..duhhh..well who said so ? The tabloids that's who. When has the great general public come out marching in the streets saying nothing is being done about crime ?

How can these nitwits base everything they say and do on tabloid headlines ?
JK2006 with Jon Snow, Ian Blair (the cop who has just lost his job), Helena Kennedy QC and Baroness, Phil Wheatley boss of the prison service (who I respect) and others.
"Can we build our way out of the prison crisis?".
In Church House, which is magnificent and was, I gather, the House of Commons during the second world war.

Not much of sense was spoken actually.

Nobody addressed the lack of accountability amongst police and judiciary (with Blair there who would, apart from the odd dead Brazilian or tragic mother or falsely convicted TV host murderer or ...).

Nobody pointed out the role of the meeeejah in prison overcrowding - it's a good story...

Nobody mentioned government by tabloid headline as expressed in the lyric Shami Chakrabarti...

Nobody spoke about the need for secure mental hospital accomodation...

It strikes me that either nobody in authority really cares or they are all incompetent.
