Apart from the 'big 3' (What A Wonderful World, We Have All The Time In The World, Hello Dolly) I never paid much attention to old Satchmo, but having watched the trio of programmes on him shown by BBC4 on thursday I must investigate further - particularly his 40s & 50s output. I am a relatively recent convert to jazz, and being almost put off by the sheer amount of stuff to check out have so far stuck with Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock & Dave Brubeck, but their certainly seems a lot to Armstrong's legacy. And what a great guy, always smiling, worked his way up from the bottom & worked hard right up til he died. Strange how, despite suffering years of failing health, even in his late 60's he appeared to be a picture of health & at the top of his game. |
