Angel Excellent post L.O. Agree on all points. The SNP Government have achieved more than any party since coming into power. Watching the oppostion flapping in disagreement of the release can only give them more popularity. When has upholding Scottish law been a crime?
Locked Out The thing that strikes me about this is the very public response to the whole affair is little other than the sort of hatred we condemn in the {alleged} Libyans behind the attack on PanAm 103. If all we can do is sentence people to death, what exactly makes us so bloody superior? Perhaps we should consider retitling our government ministers. Can I suggest the renaming of "Minister for Justice" to "Minister for Vengeance"? It appears that that's all we want. I can understand the feelings of those whose relatives died in the attack. But if all we can do is deny dignity in death in return, then what gives us the moral high ground?
There's something else. Much has been made of the waving of Scottish flags in Tripoli. If a middle eastern country is so ethusiastically demonstrating its admiration for the civilised behaviour of Scotland, I'd say there was a lesson to be learned. When was the last time you saw the Cross of Saint George held up in admiration in that part of the world? Scotland has done more by this single act of humanity to heal the wounds between east and west than anything the rest of us have achieved in more than 6 years of "hearts and minds" military campaigning. Alec Salmond has long been one of the more admirable British politicians. I'm an English voter. I just wish that I had the choice to return to Parliament someone with even half the moral courage the SNP have showed with this compassionate action.
veritas In this strange world where one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter, the FBI has published a letter of outrage on it's website over the release of the Lockerbie 'bomber'.

Not a mention though of Iran Air 655 on a flight from Iran to Dubai, blasted out of the air killing 290 just 6 months earlier by the USS Vincente on the claim they mistook it for a jet fighter.

No apologies, no trials or convictions for those who did it, no compensation for family members..nothing.. zilch.

And they wonder why we are hated.
JK2006 Excellent article and I have to say it crystalises my own feelings though I know practically nothing in detail about the case, for or against.

It's just that the entire affair stinks and, after my experiences with the judicial system, I know that does too.

Before it happened to me my assumption was that, generally, we get it right.
Now I assume that generally and intentionally, we get it deliberately wrong because of a few individual agendas.
david excellent article, IA, thanks for posting.
