veritas that is indeed a fascinating story and it's pleasing to see some US legislators are having a re-think about the whole thing.

this statement jumps out at me: "By passing that law, legislators were sending a message, Bates said: Sex with or among children is unacceptable."

Personally...I believe kids need protecting but when they start games with each other..whatever that involves..and adults get involved or start laying down rules..psychiatrists really should be having a good look at those adults. Sick.
Innocent Accused That article reminds me of British justice in that they cannot consent under 16 to sex acts, but can be prosecuted for engaging in them with others underage.

Simply put the law wants it both ways, even if consentual sex amongst underage partners should really be a family, not a criminal matter.Criminalising children does not solve a problem, but surely must add to existing ones, and create new ones.
JK2006 Just to show it's not just us gone mad...

JK2006 The truly frightening case (I cannot find a link) was the 15 year old boy jailed for consensual sex with his 15 year old girlfriend who had his appeal rejected because the court said SOMEONE had to be the abused and someone the abuser and felt males were the guilty gender.
giles2008 I daresay that by the end of the week it will be one in five as there is a mad rush to the local cop shop to report "non-crimes". Have you noticed that the cleanup rate for "historical" cases seems to be better than the rate for current crimes. I guess it must be a way of massaging the crime figures. Heres another one from the BBC website.
