As Jimmy Savile didn't say:
The Labour party has de-selected a prospective parliamentary candidate in Scotland after he made a series of inappropriate comments on Twitter.
Stuart MacLennan, the 24-year-old candidate for Moray, has become the first casualty of social media in the 2010 election. Candidates and MPs from all the main political parties maintain an active presence on Twitter, which allows users to post 140-character updates for anyone to read.
MacLennan has apologised for describing elderly constituents as “coffin dodgers”, complaining about “chavs” and repeated use of foul language on his Twitter profile.
I suspect we will see several more of these cases in the next few weeks. The tiresome Twitter phenomenon has loosened tongues and frazzled brains so rapidly and effectively that it will surely now just be a matter of choosing which 'controversies' to hype rather than hunt them out as in past elections. Why can't so-called grown-ups keep the odd thought unpublished these days?
