These were the words spoken by a judge to the defendant, while passing sentence, in a case I was witness to (not a witness in). It was concerning an accusation of a sex offence where no evidence was offered other than the allegation. The jury returned a guilty verdict but I got the impression that the judge disagreed. Certainly odd words to use when addressing someone you think is guilty.
I wonder if several judges are seeing something wrong with the huge number of convictions from uncorroborated allegations of this nature, but find that their hands are tied.
