Brian I've watched the Swedish films and thought they were quite good. Certainly I was impressed with the actress who played Lisbeth - I never thought anyone could capture the essence of the book's characters.
But that is also the problem.
The books worked because of the immense detail.
And it was the detail that had to be lost to create the films.
JK2006 Not as great as Dragon Tattoo but still pretty good. Just watched my (Swedish) DVD.
