Hedda thinking about Frankie, I was so excited to meet him as I had always adored his performances but like so many comedians, he was most unfunny and very serious.

I introduced him to some of the Young Ones who I thought would think he was old hat but they worshipped him.
Then he phoned me a few times and would speak for an hour about his lover who apparently was a manic depressive and made Frankie depressed and certainly me having to hear all about him.

I wasn't too impressed with the recent film about him as although the performance were good, he didn;t have all those clever quips which were only for his act.

Watching the wonderful June Whitfield tribute on BBC2 (don't worry; she's still very much around) I see Frankie Howerd.

The only person EVER to try it on with me... in a dressing room.

1) I was extremely flattered, gave him a huge kiss and said Frankie, you've made my day.
2) It wasn't the BBC - I think it was Ch4 or ITV: Clive Anderson's show in Teddington.

Hedda will be chucking at this post...

I was less flattered when I discovered Frankie tried in on with EVERYONE.

chuckling and jealous. He never tried it on with me.
steveimp Yep that's true Jk, I worked once with a retired bbc dresser and she said that frankie would chase anyone with a heart beat. She thought he was confused more than anything and yes he tried it on with her too!
Proper-Gander Just for JK. "The Stately Queens Of Comedy".

Five More Ages of Brandreth Episode 3 of 5

Availability:2 days left to listen Duration: 15 minutes

1st broadcast:Wednesday 03 October 2012

For more than fifty years, Gyles Brandreth has been a dedicated diarist. This series recalls some of the famous and notorious people he met in a long and varied career. Programme three is on Comedians. Gyles was a long time associate of Kenneth Williams, an outrageous and tortured figure. He helped Frankie Howerd with his writing and Howerd made a pass at him. Williams and Howerd were lonely and rather sad, unlike Les Dawson and Larry Grayson who delighted in their success.
