I wonder, Hedda, if you might track down anyone in Sri Lanka prepared to talk about Brian Marjoram's visit and his relationship with Ian Hepburn and other News International employees? Indeed, I wonder whether any Sri Lankans were given "expenses" during his trip there? I know it's only a media story but I suspect it would be quite a big one.

oh I'm sure people will talk . The problem when people are paid to say things, they will almost always contradict they're original claims for a further payment, especially somewhere so poor. The boys who lied about Clarke were not treated harshly as they were dirt poor and hadn't even met Clarke.

I'll enquire but westerners who knew Clarke were shocked and quite terrified...they are a fairly conservative older crowd who could not understand what was happening. They were the sort that always thought the police etc never lied.

I have no doubt the same hacks and NGOs who pursued Clarke were also after Kelly.

There is no love for British hacks in Sri Lanka by local authorities or ex-pats...they hate them for depicting the place as a 'pedo paradise'..it's not.
JK2006 I wonder, Hedda, if you might track down anyone in Sri Lanka prepared to talk about Brian Marjoram's visit and his relationship with Ian Hepburn and other News International employees? JK2006 From the excellent Independent coverage of this...

MAIN QUOTES FROM IPCC REPORT

“The investigation found it hard to understand how he, [Craig Denholm] the officer in charge, could not have been aware of the alleged hacking.”

“It is apparent from the evidence that there was knowledge of this at all levels within the investigation team.”

“Former senior officers in particular appear to have been afflicted by a form of collective amnesia about this.”

“It is more surprising that alarm bells do not appear to have rung and connections made in 2007 when two people connected with the News of the World pleaded guilty to phone hacking offences.”

“We consider it scarcely credible that no one connected to the Milly Dowler investigation recognised the relevance and importance of the knowledge that Surrey Police had in 2002 before this information was disclosed by Operation Weeting.”

“Our investigation [the IPCC’s] concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support finding a case [against Craig Denholm] to answer for gross misconduct.”

However, the good news (for at least one senior Surrey cop) is...

Surrey Police confirmed to The Independent that Mr Denholm will be remaining in his £128,000 a year post and will be eligible to retire in 2014 on a two-thirds salary next year. This follows the report concluding that the IPCC were "unable to find any witness or documentary evidence" that contradicted his assertion that he did not know the connection to the NOTW's alleged hacking.

Because time had passed and crucial evidence may have been lost or misplaced, the report states that there was "insufficient evidence" to launch a case of gross misconduct against Mr Denholm.
hedda The repercussions over the false claims about Arthur C,Clarke in Sri Lanka were endless including the local 'child protection' cops being booted out of the force when it finally dawned on higher ups they were being "assisted with expenses" by UK tabloids and interfering NGOs.

Some NGOs were driven from the country after dire threats, so beloved a figure was Clarke.

They all thought they had another "celebrity" banged to rights but were sadly mistaken. Unlike Kelly who was totally unknown in Sri Lanka, Clarke was a highly respected figure and all who knew him, knew he had also been totally paralyzed from the waist down for decades, cleverly disguised for cameras like FDR.

In Clarke's TV series he is seen walking down a beach...a scene that took days to film as he was propped and never actually moved but looked like he did with clever tricks.

In a way his vanity was his downfall but showed up 3 accusers (paid "expenses" by a UK tabloid) as liars after they described Clarke bounding around his estate and taking them to local discos or picking them up from the beach. The poor thing rarely left his house as he didn't want people to recognise him in his wheelchair.

Even his life long Sri Lanka partner, a married man with 5 children and his brothers and sisters who all lived in Clarke's rambling estate with their numerous children were described as Clarke's "victims", strangers lured into his house.

Poor Arthur legally pursued a number of self appointed "child protection" NGOs who he wished to completely destroy financially and metaphorically as he regarded them as a danger to everyone but altheimers and death nipped that in the bud.

I paid a visit last year to his house with his great friend, a scientist. His rambling old house is falling to bits and in his library are stacked all his manuscripts included unpublished ones. They were meant to go to the Smithsonian but are rotting away.
JK2006 The brilliant detective DCI Brian Marjoram, promoted and given the Milly Dowler investigation to head up in July 2002, as a direct result of his terrific job (under Craig Denholm) getting Jonathan King convicted for crimes that never took place, managed to persecute innocent Matthew Kelly the week before JK's appeal was heard. Bringing JK into all the publicity (though the two have never even met). Not that Judges read tabloids, of course.

His efforts were successful. Not only was JK's appeal rejected but he got a nice trip to Sri Lanka out of it.

Meanwhile Levi Bellfield, Milly's killer, was roaming about trying (and succeeding) in killing several other girls before another police force caught him.

Marjoram clearly had more important things to do than catch Milly's killer.

The Sun article (link below) was actually published in January 2003, just before JK's appeal was turned down.

Matthew Kelly was never charged. Karma still exists.
