'Til the Pips Squeek But Nick Clegg was more reassuring by telling us about the new anti-abuse rule (GAAR) which, thanks to the coalition, will soon become law. So whilst Chukka may have conflated the two separate issues of avoidance and evasion, our government has now legislated to outlaw the following of a technically legal process when it is clearly artificial. This is usually done by creating contrived structures, such as a brass plate company in the Netherlands, to minimise one's taxes (the method favoured by U2 and The Rolling Stones to pay around 3% tax on royalties, though dropped by Ken because he can't be arsed to fly out there to sign the paperwork).
JK2006 comes up with the "we must clamp down on tax evasion and avoidance".

NO! Clamp down on evasion. Avoidance is LEGAL. If you don't like it, change the law.

God, politicians are stupid.
