Yes it's quite mad, makes no sense. There would be great ratings, marvellous entertaining TV and a far greater likelihood of getting a winner (as we did in my era).

I am still sulking because we cant choose the song any more. (And I bet if we did it wouldn't be the potato waffle song)

A far more important election in May than the trivial UK government one is Eurovision, which brings happiness to millions. It's fun, camp and frivolous - everything life should be. For 60 years it has brought a smile to our faces (sometimes a grimace). I played a tiny part in it; stopping it from being cancelled (which Yentob wanted to do); getting the UK back in the charts (Gina G was a global smash) and eventually winning it (with Katrina and the Waves in 1997).
So I've become rather fond of it. My personal favourite UK entry? The divine Allisons with Are You Sure? The best UK entry? Gina G. My favourite Eurovision songs? Gigliola Cinquetti for Italy, Mocedades and Eres Tu and Paul Mauriat's Love Is Blue.
