it was always illegal to copy tv shows etc with your VCR (only those over 50 will know what a vcr is )

Not for me it's not. I burn EVERYTHING onto CD/Rs for car entertainment. Still haven't caught up with mp3's let alone streaming and bit torrent.

As far as I can remember, it is legal to make a personal copy of music you bought in many European countries. The idea was that you could burn a copy of a CD for your car. Very reasonable, but even that idea is a bit redundant now.

The longetivity you see in the singles chart now is a lot to do with "devices" - the ADHD Generation love their "devices" but are also constantly breaking & upgrading them. As a download is relatively cheap, the attention deficient ones buy the same track 2 or 3 times.
