Never The Bride, regulars of the just-above-toilet-circuit level clubs for the last 15 years or so, beloved of Bassey and a small cultish following...it's nice to see a band of long-term working musicians get a breakthrough like this after a fair old few swings of the slugger. |

Will anyone ever match Cliff Richard's record of having had No.1s in five decades, and such consistent chart success over six decades? |

Much like the wonderful Tony Bennett, who rarely charts but I would not rule it out happening again, I heard him the other day and he has an absolutely effortless technique still. |

Of course, we have to remember that Shirley has had alot of "wilderness years" too !
There were entire decades when she never charted at all. |

Just thought I'd say how cool it is to see Shirley Bassey a new entry in the 'official' singles chart. Wonderful singer.
From her first hit ("Banana Boat Song", w/e 15th Feb 1957) to her latest ("The Living Tree", w/e 5th May 2007), Shirley Bassey's chart career has spanned 50 years, 2 months and 18 days [2620 weeks]. She, thus, became the first artist to have a career of hits spanning more than 50 years.
There's also Henri Salvador in France, a true old school performer that sings, writes, used to tap dance, acts, charms, etc etc.
The Wikipedia entry below doesn't do him justice. His first hit was in 1956. They just don't make 'em like him and Bassey any more.
