Did theey sing with a live band, or have a backing track. I hate it when they sing to a backing track., its lime watching Karoake. |

He actually wrote/co-wrote all their three No1 singles, so anyone who can write a hatrick of UK number one hits is in a reasonably select group. I had no idea he wrote any of them.
Their chart/record sales discography is somewhat unusual. Within a year of topping the charts twice they couldn't sell a record to save their lives, never mind kisses. The singles success suddenly died almost instantly. But even stranger, it looks like they had back to back No1 releases with Angelo (summer 1977) and then Figaro (early 1978) but between these two chart toppers they put out another single, Highwayman, which absolutely bombed and did nothing at all. There was also an album called Images out at the time of these No1 singles but the album wasn't boosted by the singles and didn't sell or trouble the charts. |

They had many other hits and continued up until covid playing small theates, and butlins etc.
I saw them in a biggish theatre but they were part of the package. The tour may have been a flop because they never came down again nor did the other groups. It does seem there was money and popularity for the 1960's nostalgia package gigs. Even Paul Jones from Manfreds is still going depsite being over 80.
I think they even did things like working man clubs like Chicory Trip seems to do now or car fetes around the South East. They came and went very quickly, I wonder if they got ripped off also.
The Butlins circuit may seem corny but there is a lot of money in it, they also do attract some very big names e.g. Nazareth Echo and The Bunnymen. It's nice to see the Darts are still going on the small circuit along with David Essex.
I am shocked Racey are still going, but I have no clue how many of the original members are in the band.
I hate that most old bands have music made by keyboards/ synths with dodgy midi files. A bit like many re-recordings we were fooled into buying in the 80s and 90s. Then in the small print would say "Re-recordings using as many of the original members as possible" in the inlay cards not on the back, depending on the record label. |
