I was always surprised Peely took so well to presenting TOTP with such enthusiasm, I would have never placed him on that show. He was also a big fan of Eurovision too. Not many people probably know that.

A regular in my saw him him in record shops around a lot, Peel was not very approachable; I was told. John Peel would grab a basket and a stack full of thrash metal, doom metal and grind-core because of the gruesome artwork and expletive song titles. John Peel mentioned he liked the band Boulder, Someone has to.

I loved Peely as a person but his shows were unlistenable except once in a blue moon he'd play something mass appeal that nobody else would - that was how I picked up The Cuban Boys.

He gave some great groups their first break like The Smiths, the Undertones, and Altered Images, however most of his shows were full of unlistenable obscure rubbish. Towards the end of his life he was increasingly marginalised by the BBC, with his programme getting later and later. I suppose on any other channel he would have been axed much earlier.

I never listened to John Peel in the evenings and looking back I regret never even thinking about doing so even in his latter years. I believe he broke some big artists in the 1970's and 1980's so that would have been great to hear them before they were famous.
Wasn't he in Dallas on the day of the JFK assassination.
