Check out the Craig Charles Funk And Soul Show on BBC 6 this Saturday between 6pm and 9pm. I had just contacted Craig when he mentioned that it was quite a coincidence, since he was already planning to spin "Sh' Mon" during this week's show. Who was it that said, "There ARE no coincidences"...

Fascinating...
From Wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reet_Petite
"Reet Petite" by Jackie Wilson
Written by Berry Gordy and Tyran Carlo, a pseudonym of Jackie's cousin Billy Davis[1], and produced by Carl Davis, the song is one of the classics of rock and roll music. Taking the title from the Louis Jordan song Reet, Petite and Gone, this was Jackie Wilson's first recording as a solo artist. The song peaked at #62 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1957 and reached #6 on the UK singles chart. With the success of the song, Gordy was able to fund the launch of Motown Records.
In December 1986, more than two years after Wilson's death, the song became a #1 in the UK for four weeks following its use in a commercial for Levi's.[2] In the commercial, a claymation version of Wilson sings the song. This held the record for the longest time between a song's debut on the chart and it finally reaching number one (29 years, 1 month, 11 days) until it was overtaken by Tony Christie's (Is This the Way to) Amarillo in 2005.

Wow! I'm now officially shopping "Sh' Mon" for a UK advert (my dad owns master rights and part of the publishing). If it happens I promise to give The Tipsheet Messageboard all of the credit!

Thanks everyone for shedding some light on Northern Soul. Now that I've looked into it, there are TONS of blogs and websites devoted to it (though no one seems to go into the history of it much).
Thanks for the tip on Ian...I've put in a "Friend" request to him. Last, but not least JK, you have me dreaming that someday someone might want to use "Sh' Mon" for a commercial. Stranger things have happened, right?

The track is very Northern Soul.
I'm rather a fan of the up-tempo soul stuff. |
