I agree that MOR has lasting appeal, but I also think that a band needs it's own distinctive sound for lasting success. McFly don't really stand out much from various other bands of their genre. Well done to them for maintaining some kind of following despite that, but will they or their songs still be in the minds of music fans in ten years time? That is the big test. |

Interesting to note that both Robbie and Take That made beautiful MOR music. I think for a long term strategy, artists need to invest in this genre as early as possible. MOR music last forever and delivers longterm results methinks. |

I feel quite ill buying the Mail most days, but one does have to say the layout is addictive.
Just don`t start believing the editorials. |

Take That were doing a kind of updated MOR from the get-go with the Barry Manilow/Bee Gee covers and suchlike. And Barlow was a middle-aged 24 year old. McFly might have been aiming at a similar market but took their musical cues from punk pop/power pop with bands like Jellyfish/Green Day etc as their influences. It's a lot harder to move from there to the broader appeal.
I felt a bit ill buying the Mail yesterday - but good luck to the lads, some of their tunes are ok.My only quibble would be it says on the back of the CD that a 'deluxe' version will be out in September with 4 more tracks ie - that isn't the actual album but a SAMPLER. (albeit a large one) |

Actually, now that is a more interesting comment than you would think.
Take That, grew up and aged gracefully with their music, I hate to say it, but McFly have not. |
