Yes... I certainly subscribe to your view JK over Orbison's greatness as a "soul" singer. What is "soul" anyway? Roy certainly sang from the heart and unlike X Factor singers, you BELIEVED everything the guy sang.
It's stunning to think he's been gone for 20 years and I am pleased that the BBC have rightly been paying their tributes. It was such a tragic end to what was proving to be one of the most stunning comebacks ever seen... at least he died knowing he had never been forgotten and was loved and revered. The hits may had dried up between the late 60s and mid 80s but he was always treated as a hero by British audiences... and rightly so.
We will never see or hear anybody quite like him again. The true sign of a great - that instantly recognisable and unique voice. I for one miss it terribly, but what a legacy he left behind. |

My all time favourite singer and I reckon the greatest "soul" singer of all time, though it requires a different definition of soul.
Presley acclaimed Roy as the best all time. |

It was brilliant that documentary, including that highly unlikely tale of how Bono wrote "Mystery Girl" and then met the Big O. Wonderful man, Roy, met him twice and he was the most charming and polite man I have ever come across in the "Shallow plastic money trench" they call themusic business. |

Not sure if anyone else saw it (I only caught the last 15 minutes) but there were two programmes on Roy Orbison on BBC 4 late on Monday night which are now both available on iPlayer.
One a documentary on the man himself "Roy Orbison: The Big O in Britain":

And then the Black and White concert with the likes of Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne etc

Well worth two hours of your time. BBC 4 are just superb at this. |
