Get over it !
We all have to do it and if you had any fans you wouldn't really care. If you don't have any fans you should not be playing anywhere. Get a camera, get a basement and stick it up on Youtube until you get some fans then go and play.
Gee we are in a credit crunch and if you are not profitable then you can't expect favours. Promoters can only advertise but have you ever gone out to see "Pete Jakes and the fatcats" ? Or how about "Bonzo Snodgrass and the 3 Lions" ?
Of course not so what are you expecting promoters to do. Sorry but pay to play is a sign of the times and those bleating about have no idea how to pull a crowd.

i play in a band in southampton (burnthefleet.com)I wondered if anyone had any comments on this strategy that some promoters take to selling tickets. In Southampton it seems the only way of getting any good support slots is by doing the promoters job for them and more frequently than not you end up having to hand over £350-500 pounds in order to open a show. Also this quite often leaves the venues slightly empty as friends of the local bands end up leaving after seeing the opening bands they came to see as a favor. Any comments anyone, its just a subject that leaves a sour taste in my mouth as it never seemed to be like this growing up.
