Totally agree - I heard this on Brian Matthew's Sounds Of The Sixties a few weeks ago. A titanic song and a titanic performance.
My nomination is a fairly obvious one - "Stay With Me" by Lorraine Ellison. Should have been a huge number one but didn't even make the Top 50 here. |

Tommy James & The Shondells - Crimson In Clover.
Was a No. 1 in the USA, but failed to chart here.
(I was recently reminded of the track as it's contained on the soundtrack CD of "The Boat That Rocks") |

I don't think Grapefruit's 'Come down to the Station' made the charts. I think that was the A side.
Gosh. I'll have to find my copy and check. |

Shang A Doo Lang Adrianne Posta version is brilliant would really suit Spectors Wall of Sound. There are several singles of POsta on ebay but a Cd has never been released. |
Metal Mickey |
OK, way too many to count, but here are the first 5 that popped into my head...
LOVIN' SPOONFUL - Do You Believe In Magic?
SPIRAL STAIRCASE - More Today Than Yesterday (both of these first two are perfect sunshine pop.)
SHANGRI-LA'S - I Can Never Go Home Any More (amazing over-the-top girlgroup melodrama)
LORRAINE ELLISON - Stay With Me (allegedly cut in a single take with Frank Sinatra's orchestra when he failed to turn up to a session)
DONOVAN - Wear Your Love Like Heaven (he had plenty of hits, but this is my favourite track of his.)
And it's hard to believe three of my favourite ever artists, LOVE, LAURA NYRO and NICK DRAKE, never had any hits... I'd nominate Alone Again Or, Wedding Bell Blues and River Man respectively... |
