I went to see Melanie in concert last night in a small independent theatre in Nottingham and was blown away.
I went to see her largely out of curiosity but also on recommendation from several people who have seen her live.
What I liked is that, altho the show was billed as a 40th anniversary show for Woodstock and her album Candles In The Wind, the whole show didn't depend on nostalgia- she played several numbers she has written over the past few years with her son Beau (as his name suggests he is very, very handsome, tho painfully shy- he accompanied her as well as being support act). The newer songs were every bit as engaging as the older ones, and her between the songs patter was both moving and entertaining, a bit a la Janis Ian.
It was a tiny venue and there was a French tv crew there filming a documentary so it was bit cameras and lights in yer face but the atmosphere was superb. She gave it a full 2 hours and looked exhausted at the end but when a cake was brought on stage to commemorate 40 years she insisted on blowing out the candles and cutting slices for the people in the first row.
One thing she talked about was the ageism in the music industry. She said that if people stopped and listened they would actually find that many artists get better and better with age, whilst being more and more ignored by mainstream media. Very true. |
