Which I was pretty amazed by to be honest. Shows just how much single sales collapsed post the broadband revolution in the middle part of the decade, allowing the illegal free for all. At least sales are picking up now (though as we know revenues from digital single sales aren't compensating for the album sales collapse).
With just 45 days left till 2010 it does however look like two artists will get the triple, Black Eyed Peas and Leona Lewis which is ironic given their chart battle this week.
Leona's Run is just 400 copies short of platinum and Black Eyed Peas' Boom Boom Pow 14k short. Leona will pass 600k today or tomorrow and BEP in 2-3 weeks.
Not that surprised to see Meet Me Halfway beat out Happy this week. The chart massively favours urban/dance at the moment and Happy as fine a song as it is, remains a straight-up ballad designed to sell albums. Leona has much stronger single material on her new album. Outta My Head and I Got You both sound like potential #1s in the current climate.
Great year for Black Eyed Peas. 26 consecutive weeks at number 1 in America and this is their third #1 in the UK this year. Unusually it's the fifth time they've been announced as the new #1 in 2009 as both Boom Boom Pow and I Gotta Feeling had two visits to the top spot. The world's biggest pop band of the decade by a country mile.
