Agreed Mickey, Almond is criminally underrated.
He is partly to blame for this, as he follows his heart rather than commercial sense when deciding his new direction. That has made for a fascinating, if not really marketable, body of work.
Good to hear he won a Mojo award yesterday.
Mojo said:
"When we found out that Marc Almond was celebrating his thirtieth anniversary as a singer we felt we had to mark the occasion. Anthony Hegarty (of Antony And The Johnsons fame) was of the same opinion, and flew in especially from New York to present this award. Essentially, the MOJO Hero Award honours the work of someone truly beloved by the magazine and Marc is one of those guys. He is the greatest torch singer still out there. Marc puts so much of himself into a song. He is a rare performer. A true hero."

Just so you know you're not alone David, after a few days' listening I think it's an excellent album too - Marc's been getting a lot of press for this record so I hope it results in some decent sales or attention. He's a very underrated artist, probably because people think they have him pegged from what they know of Soft Cell and his solo hits, but I think this album would (pleasantly) surprise many listeners who would otherwise dismiss it...

I shall soon be getting a reputation round here as a Marc Almond groupie
But his new album truly is a tour de force. It's already proving a marmite moment with critics, but that ain't a bad thing. It's a brave album, self-produced and written, very introspective and so personal you sometimes feel you should look away. The music tho is luscious and gorgeous in every respect.
Here are a few clips:
the title track with its own video, very glam rock:
this song 'It's All Going On' is clearly an homage to the likes of Joe Meek (tho perhaps not the lyrics lol)
this is an acoustic performance he did at HMV Oxford Street on Monday of one of the most beautiful songs from the album, clearly about his near fatal motorbike accident. Very moving.
and finally the video for 'The Exhibitionist'- great stuff.
