I haven't watched the show for years but as it nears its end, I'm watching the last few just to remember it as it descended.
Speaking as someone with just a few months of my twenties left, I found very little there to inspire me at all. OK maybe it isn't aimed at my age group.
I can see why Lemar is successful. It's pleasant "gospel meets motown" and the songs are very commercial. Proof that people do actually want average pop.
The Specials was far and away the best track on there and I'd never seen a performance of it other than the video, so that was a surprise.
On the subject of current stuff,I keep hearing an infuriatingly catchy, easy singalong, girl thing on Wogan's show every morning. It sounds like the kind of thing Tracey Ullman did in 1983 and although it's very dated in sound, I suspect it's new? |

Primal Scream opened; a real relic from the past; sounding 70's, looking 50's.
That's IN their 50's which they probably are.
Ronan does Goo Goo's Iris from Tipsheet CD 250 (this may seem more information than you need but Ronan and Louis cherished every issue of the Tipsheet as his solo career indicates)...

Then Lemar who I just don't get at all; he's absolutely fine but without one iota of individuality or originality.

Nice retro guitars but, then, aren't they all these days?

Alesha from Mystique (all this is a trifle beyond me) did quite a good rock soul kind of Brit Beyonce thing, all crutch and groin.
Specials from the vault - 25 years ago; Ghost Town.. a great original track.
They don't make them like that anymore.
Specialist yet mass appeal. Remember that ya..yayayaya... bit? Extraordinary.
By God we made real hits back then.
Gnarls do Smiley Faces - almost as NOT Crazy as that ghastly second single was for Orson.
Shoot all A&R - especially those who ignore the ears that heard the first one.

As I said last week, surprisingly well done; do it their own way and Freddie would be flattered.
Next week; last ever Top of the Pops... sad.
