JK2006 Thank you Dixie. So what would I have done if 12 years ago I had taken on Eric Nicoli's offer as Chairman of EMI globally?

Although I was seriously mistaken "that online will only ever account for 5% of music sales", I was getting pretty intrigued by the internet (we started this site in the 90s). I would have constructed both a radio and TV online station playing great music (not just EMI). I would have established a small, wholly owned label dealing with downloads. Standalone except for areas like royalties, legal, copyright etc.

I would have concentrated on breaking America properly (all my best US friends like Morris, Davis, Weiss, Ienner were successful in that).

Barry Weiss would have led EMI US.

And I would have continued to support The Brits School.
And I would have acquired the services of Simon Cowell and Richard Russell (as both championed by the Tip Sheet)..

It would indeed be a very different industry.
dixie Two things happened that significantly changed things in the record industry in the early years of this millennium. 1. JK got “taken out” for a few years, and 2. Obie died. Thinks would have been different if these events hadn’t happened.
JK2006 Of course I know that, Bunk; not even deep in my heart (which I keep in my wallet and for which I require a PIN number I've forgotten). But the point is - even though I'd not dream of attending as we all know the tabloid feast it would provoke - the music industry, like the BBC and decent media, ought to develop and cherish their almost defunct backbones. It makes life easier and better.
Bunk Morland You may consider it bad manners, but deep in your heart you know the reason. Vile Pervert.
JK2006 When it started 20 years ago, only Obie and I used to give lectures and judge contests and invite the pupils to the Brits - it was a pain going all the way to Croydon (sounds like an Elvis Costello song title) and most busy execs couldn't be bothered to trek there and back just to encourage kids to make great music.

20 years later I gather there's a celebration - guess who hasn't been invited? Clearly good manners are not on the educational curriculum.
