I worked as a drummer in a band playing at a Club Med in 1986 and heard great music I'd never heard in the UK. The French really embraced what was coming out of Africa.
Re. the video. It's clever I suppose but i find it pointless and wonder how they'll make any money? I'd pay never to hear it again. |

J&B: a little sidenote: I think the French industry did far more to bring AfroPop to the world. Look at the success of artists as diverse as Tiken Jah Fakoly, Cesaria Evora, Myriam et Amadou and Khaled (whom I saw on TV last night with "C'est la vie" - is this new?). The Belgians did well with Zap Mama, Manou Gallo and Mokoomba who were on Later this week.

I have to agree about France and the AfroPop / World Music connection (I hate the expression World Music, tho!) In the years I lived in Paris, the place was buzzing with African/North African music, and it wasn't as marginalised there as it's always been here. |

As a second sidenote, Womex is running in Thessaloniki for the moment.

I totally agree K and you know who I blame?
The UK music industry! How on earth did we lose the lead
and the position we had for decades?
The UK brought reggae to the world, Afropop, and other exotic sounds.
Fair play to Paul Simon but don't forget the legacy of Sting and The Police and others
who also imported African sounds. The young in Africa aspire to emulate Kanye
West and others instead of just perfecting what they had. There is going to
be a bit of westernisation here and there but in its basic form there are plenty of
African/Western pop hybrids that are still original and not crap. But these bozos have
connected with a large audience so I have to credit them for that. |
