I always felt Hague was an intelligent, pleasant man who just wasn't cut out for politics.

As Tory leader, he impressed in the House(regularly wiping the floor with Blair - for all the good it did him), while allowing the party to be driven by a right-wing, Eurosceptic agenda which (I suspect) he didn't entirely endorse.

I remember Hague hosting "Have I got news for you" and was rather surprised at his wit. Very astute and funny, but it didn't carry over to speaking in the Commons.
