The Thatcher Years on BBC2 - fascinating 11 Years, 10 Months ago
Putting both sides of the story; wonderfully balanced; but the ultimate answer has to be... what a leader! What a woman! With huge faults and great talents; and as honest and honourable as you could want in a leader.

And charisma! Wow.

just one end result 20 years later...councils forking out billions of taxpayer's money to prop up private landlords because of one of Maggie's failed experiments.

I don't share your fascination.

Well I thought it was a fantastic and very well put together series, concluding with the statement that it was inevitable but sad that she should go. Ken Clark was great. Chris Patten not good.

I've said it many times; I disagreed with many of her policies but thought she was an incredible leader who lost the plot towards the end.

If I was a gambling man I would bet she achieved more in an average day back in the 80s than you have in your entire life.

'Maggie Was Great To Start With...'

Re:The Thatcher Years on BBC2 - fascinating 11 Years, 10 Months ago
Didn't see this programme but have to say that Maggie was never a person you could ignore. Like JK2006, I agree that she was both a fabulous leader but seriously lost the plot towards the end and had to go...

To be honest, I think all of us are dictators given the chance. We all believe we are right by definition and thus, given a chance to put our strongly held beliefs into action, I don't see any of us would act differently. Its like now with 'The Bedroom Tax' and the seemingly horrid Ian Duncan Smith telling everyone what they are doing is justified. People like Smith who have never had to live life at the bottom of the pile and have no idea on why many in council homes with a spare bedroom are only there in the first place because their local COUNCIL placed them there because they did not have any 1 bedroom flats available!
That is always the way with governments though, isn't it? THEY make the mistake and YOU have to pay it back. YOU make the mistake and THEY prosecute you for it AND you have to pay it back with interest..and then they talk of people 'taking responsibility' for their lives and actions!

At least Maggie (and Tony Blair, who I similarly respected but often disagreed with) was always prepared to stand or fall by her decisions. I am sure with the benefit of hindsight now that she would have done some thing differently but then wouldn't we all?

The UK was such a state in the late 70s after Heath's lacklustre premiership and failed fight with the unions, Wilson's lacklustre premiership and surrendering to the unions, the general malaise brought on by the energy crisis and recessions, callghan's failed clearing up of the whole mess - she was only going to be a massive improvement. She just went too far and Blair only worsened it.

I can promise you Andrew she was neither Vile nor Silly. She got a lot wrong and a lot right. But she was head and shoulders above most politicians and everything she did, she did because she thought it was right for the country. It often wasn't, but that's a fine start.

Criminals started the riots, and the mines were closed by Hesseltine in the early 90s.

If poll tax wasn't created there wouldn't of been poll tax riots.

PM who won elections because of a divided left. Those who abhor her disastrous decisions are in the majority.

Thatcherism is a religion and she is a Goddess in the shining eyes of her subjects.

you pay it because the so-called "free marketers" capitalize their profits and socialize their losses.

The scroungers aren't limited to the lower orders.
