Developments on the murder of Steven B Williams "The Tipsheet CD"... 17 Years, 7 Months ago
(CBS4) LOS ANGELES Los Angeles homicide investigators asked for an arrest warrant in the death of former Denver disc jockey Steven B. Williams.

CBS4's investigator Brian Maass broke the story about Williams' death and has been following it ever since.

The sheriff's department said they have a circumstantial case but asked for a warrant for one of Williams' best friends. They believe Harvey Morrow killed Williams during an argument over money.

In May, Williams was shot and killed and his body was found floating in the Pacific near Catalina Island.

"The case has been submitted to the Los Angeles district attorney for review and filing of murder charges against Harvey Morrow," said Lt. Al Grotefend with the L.A. Sheriff's department.

Morrow, 55, had been a close friend of Williams in recent years and the two were planning to sail the world on Morrow's 69-foot boat.

"We believe the motive was financial gain on the part of Harvey Morrow," Lt. Grotefend said. "There was approximately $1.9 million missing from Steven's account. We know that money went into Harvey Morrow's account."

Investigators believe Morrow had been stealing from Williams and that's what triggered a deadly confrontation.

"Steven talked to a close friend the night before and told the friend he was going to confront Harvey Morrow and tell that he wanted his money back," Lt. Grotefend said. "We believe that's what caused the actual confrontation which resulted in this murder."

But there are no eyewitnesses and no smoking gun. While some blood was found in two or three places on Morrow's boat, investigators were still trying to figure out whose blood it is.

"We believe there's enough there that the D.A. will file murder charges and we believe we've got enough to convict him," Lt. Grotefend said.

He believes they should have the arrest warrant within the next two weeks but finding Morrow is a different story.

He disappeared after Williams' death and hasn't been heard from. Detectives believe he may have fled the country but don't know where he is.

Steven B, as he was known, was half of the popular "Steven B and the Hawk" morning show on KBPI in the 1980s.

Suspect in Denver disc jockey's death caught in Great Falls
By KEILA SZPALLER
Tribune Staff Writer

Authorities in Great Falls arrested a man on Wednesday who is a suspect in the shooting death of a man in Los Angeles County.

The victim, a Denver disc jockey, was spotted floating in the Pacific Ocean in May by someone who happened to be yachting near Catalina Island, according to the Cascade County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Harvey Morrow, 55, was arrested around 1 p.m. Wednesday in connection with the crime, said Cpl. Scott Wagner, of the Sheriff's Office.

Morrow arrived in Great Falls some two weeks ago, Wagner said, and he worked as a sales person at Pete's Auto Sales for one week. Another employee suspected something was amiss with Morrow, said the company's Pete Bleskin.

The employee looked up Morrow on the Internet and learned he was wanted in Los Angeles County.

Several stories from Denver media outlets report Morrow as a person "of extreme interest" in the murder investigation of the Denver disc jockey.

The body of Steve Williams, 59, was found at sea with a gunshot wound to the head, according to those reports. Williams had been a well-known announcer in Denver in the 1980s.

He had recently been living in Southern California with Morrow on a 69-foot yacht, which he and Morrow planned to sail around the world, according to a CBS News report.

Morrow disappeared in June after spotting police searching his yacht, according to the Rocky Mountain News.

Two weeks ago Morrow turned up in Great Falls.

Bleskin didn't comment much on the case for fear he would endanger his employees, some of whom are family.

"This is a guy we won't be talking a lot about," he said. "...He wasn't a peanut killer. He shot a guy."

After first hearing from the auto company employee who did the Internet search, the Sheriff's Office contacted an investigator in Los Angeles County, Wagner said.

The investigator confirmed that Morrow was a person of interest, and officers here kept Morrow under observation while authorities in California worked on a warrant, Wagner said.

Thursday, three agents from Los Angeles flew into Great Falls to arrest Morrow, and they and Cascade County deputies apprehended him without incident, Wagner said.

The U.S. Department of Justice's Marshals Service aided in the apprehension.

Morrow will be held in the detention center in Great Falls until he is extradited to Los Angeles County.

He is cited in Montana for being a fugitive from justice. Morrow appears in District Court today to begin the extradition process.
