TOPIC: Captain Philips - fantastic

Captain Philips - fantastic 11 Years, 9 Months ago
Paul Greengrass was always the best action director in the world; with this, confirmed best director.
Hanks? If you had doubts as I did (I hated Forest Gump) they are all removed during the final five minutes of this incredible movie.
Stunning. Best movie? Quite probably (in my all time top 20).

Sadly and disappointingly I wasn't that impressed. Agree, Hanks was superb and made me cry, too, in the last 10 minutes. I'm a big Hanks fan, but: Agree, Forrest Gump surely has to be one of the most irritating and pointless films ever made. Agree, Paul Greengrass is a truly great action Director - I thought Green Zone was more gripping than this, which I found plotless, themeless (apart from a possible 'the US are a bunch of thug bully boys' whiff) and over long. I rather liked Muse, not the band but the Somali Pirate leader and the angry man pirate sidekick, though. 6/10, at best, for me I'm afraid. Personally, on a Hanks tip, I think Saving Private Ryan is one of the best War movies ever.

Top 20?

Hanks was good, in some scenes at the very end of a 2+ hour movie.

But - drawn out, mediocre, low budget and very much similar to the usual action/shooting/internal gang feud/US on top style of movie.

However, mostly, a true story.

An Oskar for Hanks? NO.

Maybe for the black actor who played the Captain of the Somalia crew........

How did Forrest Gump do so well in the cinema ? The only good thing about it was the soundtrack.

Barkhad Adbi - winner of a BAFTA, and probably an Oscar.

Only 28 and his first role.

Yes - he deserved Best Supporting Actor as does Sally Hawkins for Supporting Actress Oscar (Cate will rightly win Best Actress).

I was surprised by how many negative comments here for the movie. I thought it was fantastic - as was Gravity, Philomena, Le Weekend, Blue Jasmine and Saving Mr Banks.

Six cracking films I saw week after week - and Captain Phillips was the first of those six.

With the exception of Gravity, I would agree.

This movie won BAFTAs for cinematography, music, sound and visual effects.

All well deserved - as the movie was spectacular to the eye.

But IMO, it lacked any real storyline, character, plot, gravitas or meaning.

It was just a nice outing to outer space.

Not IMO, an Oscar candidate - save for the technical categories already acknowledged by BAFTA.
