"what we have seen could rival any great work of fiction" 11 Years, 8 Months ago
Home affairs committee chairman Keith Vaz said: "We were appalled by the evidence given by DS Hinton, Sgt Jones and Inspector MacKaill. We have recalled them to correct the record and if they do not, they will be in prima facie contempt of Parliament.

"The narrative of what we have seen could rival any great work of fiction.

"At every point and at every level, instead of being transparent, we have uncovered a process that obstructs the truth. If this can happen to a cabinet minister, what hope is there for anyone else?"

Oh yes - at last - individual accountability kicks in.
Are we finally seeing the end of "Police say..." or "a police spokesman says..."?
So, if politicians and, who knows, judges are now interested in police cock ups and lies and evasion...

How about Surrey Police examining how Milly Dowler's killer was allowed to roam free for years and kill two more innocent girls?

The accountability is really starting to kick in now -

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation.

The three constables who originally went to Mr Ebrahimi’s maisonette have been suspended and served notices of potential gross misconduct charges; three other police officers involved in his detention have not been suspended but face the same charge.

In addition, six civilian call handlers will be questioned to establish whether they treated Mr Ebrahimi’s cries for help with due seriousness.

I get very worried by the "wrongly accused of being a paedophile"angle of media coverage on this, which implies that the media would consider what happened as acceptable if he'd actually been a paedophile.

Yes .... it also absolves them of any blame from having whipped up a frenzy (amongst their moronic "readers") in the first place !

I've just seen the shocking footage (on BBC News) of the moronic lager-swilling dole scum (no one actually believed he worked, do they?) who tormented then murdered Bijan Ebrahimi.

Violent attacks are on the increase.
There is NEVER an excuse for it.

Lack of respect is largely due to the breakdown in society caused by the "me" culture - of my rights, and my freedoms, my entitlements (and, yes, my benefits !)

I've come to a conclusion .... it's time to bring back hanging.

This piece of rubbish has probably never contributed anything to society and almost certainly never will.

Society needs to be brought into line .... people need to be taught respect - of other people's rights, freedoms, property and lives.

I think you miss the point, Pattaya.

It's not about hanging dole dossers - its about getting rid (permanently) of violent thugs who have abandoned society.

I'm not talking about all murderers - not crimes of passion etc - just those who are clearly out of control (and always have been?), and are obviously beyond redemption.

It's the first duty of ANY government to protect its citizens. Over the years all have failed to do that as the "punishment" does not fit the crime.

There was a time when you could count murderers on the fingers of your hand - because there were so few. Not, its daily. In this particular case its also sadistic.

JK is wrong in his approach - all that does is makes excuses for them - and certainly ensures that it WILL happen again.

There is no hope for this sort - society does not need them / society will not miss them - get rid of them !

'twas but a joke ITK...however if you look back at the time of gibbeting etc...say 17-18th century you may just find the UK was far more lawless than now...oh and if you look up the stats for recent years you'll see murder rates are falling.

That's only last 10 years, Pat ( and it's still variable)

What about say 50 years ago?

One of the reasons people like Myra Hindley we're remembered is because such crimes were so rare, surely?

But for anyone who wallows in the superiority of the UK justice system, with its human rights legislation and touchy-feely approach to child murderers, it is worth bearing in mind that our rate of violent crime is actually far higher than that of the United States.

According to a 2009 study, there were 2,034 offences per 100,000 people that year in the UK, putting Britain at the top of the international league table. America recorded just 466. The US seems to be getting something right: executing cold-blooded killers might be part of it.
