I think you are wrong, JK - just as you are wrong about Syria.
You don't want any more innocents to die (in Syria) - but by sitting on your hands and doing nothing you are ensuring that it WILL happen.
By being soft on sadistic thugs we just encourage more of the same (as statistics since the death penalty was abolished, will show).
These people need to fear what will happen to them ... in the majority of cases it will hold them back.
I was reading of the case of Anthony Lingard today - he was executed for murder over 200 years ago. After his death his body was put in a gibbet and hung in a local field for several months (apart from when it was temporarily taken to Tideswell to be exhibited at the local fair !).
Today - over 200 years later - the field is still called Gibbet field.
Let them fear .... it's our best defence.
If creating a world where ruling by fear is the best thing you can suggest ITK maybe you should read a few books on Idi Armin, Colonel Ghaddafi or Saddam Hussain when you put down the Conservative party manifesto!
Just a thought...

We don't need the advice of 'derbyshire heritage' on this matter!
Mass murderers (9/11 etc.) put themselves outside any normal logic or consideration.
They couldn't care less who or how many they kill.
But our justice should be humane - a word Saddam never heard.

Opponents will point out that the death penalty is practiced in the states with the highest murder rates. This is true, but it doesn’t mean that executions don’t work - it just means that they take place where they are needed most.
The states without the death penalty historically have lower than average levels of crime.
When the death penalty was suspended nationwide from 1968 to 1976, murder rates went through the roof - except in those states. When the ban was lifted, the states that reintroduced the death penalty saw an astonishing 38 per cent fall in their murder rate over twenty years. Indeed, there is a statistical relationship between the growth in executions and the decline in murder.

If dangerous criminals were kept in a safe place until they were safe to be released there would be no need to ask for them to be killed.
Over 30 killers killed again after being freed from prison between 2000/1 and 2010/11, statistics show.
Figures released by the Home Office show 29 people with homicide convictions went on to commit murder and six went on to commit manslaughter.
Of those 29 murderers, 13 previously committed murder and 16 manslaughter.
The government says it does all it can to protect the public from offenders "but sadly risk can never be eliminated entirely" (*).
