Like Ghandi, Mandela inspired and changed the world single handily.
I am in Cape Town, and can hear the singing and celebrations for his life from my window - very moving and thought provoking to see white, black, coloured, indian and Asians all united in grief.

Pity the Tories refused to support him when he needed it most.

In his brave stand against the most blatant and cruelest of inequalities.

Margaret Thatcher's biggest error of judgment?

But this fine human being never made an issue of it; he just kept striving for what he knew was right.

And achieved democracy for his country, against all the odds....

BBC newsreader Huw Edwards was clearly holding back tears as he made the announcement.

Mandela touched everybody

Not sure she did oppose his release .... she didn't want to put sanctions on SA, but that was to protect UK jobs (and grab some of the business from the countries who were using sanctions).

Whether it was the right decision (it wasn't !) is debatable.

Maggie saw democracy for what it was there, great on paper, but a lawless cesspit for Joe Public.
Mandela was a great man,but perfect no.

This man told the IRA, a group that killed 4 members of my family because they were protestant and terrorized my country for 35 years to 'Not give up their weapons until their goal is achieved' when NI was trying to achieve peace. While in prison he was offered freedom many times as long as he publicly stated he renounced violence and worked for a better SA... he refused.

He signed off on many hundreds of deaths, even while in prison.

This man was a terrorist, who after release still supported terrorism.

BBC coverage is nauseating bit like when Diana died.
