Curious that.
You are not obliged to give your details unless you're under arrest, as I'm sure you know. Problem is, if you don't, they will most likely pretend they have cause to suspect you of possessing stolen or prohibited items and will then conduct a stop and search. As you say, it could get embarrassing. They will likely check your wallet for bank cards in case you have stolen any, don't you know. They are obliged to give you their names and numbers as soon as you request them after they start engaging with you and before they conduct any search. Always a good idea to have pen and paper ready for that. They don't like it one little bit when you start taking down their details. Sometimes they will grab the pen out of your hand and tell you that they fear it may be used as an offensive weapon, don't you know.
So all round, the police are very nice people who impartially apply our laws for the preservation of our liberty and only a cynic would suggest they would ever abuse any of the increasingly wide powers we have given them. (Isn't that right officer?).
Could be they made up the razor blade business and wanted to know who you were for some reason. Could just as easily be they were genuine and the store management don't have a record of whatever happened. I just don't know.
I'm aware of not having to give details, Jim (wasn't it a case in Grimsby in 1956 that settled that?) - but thought, why not? - I certainly had nothing to hide.
Also correct that whatever "duty manager" I spoke to today (I have the name) may not be aware of this incident.
I also checked Derbyshire police website - where they DO show CCTV of people that they are looking for (dating back to July), and guess what? - no incident in the town I was in - and no mention of stolen razor blades !
www.derbyshire.police.uk/Caught-on-camera/CaughtOnCamera.aspx
As the police couldn't (or wouldn't) say when the incident happened, I took it that it was some time (days / weeks) ago, rather than today. Surely no one can "remember" a face for so long? That's why I asked to see the photograph, assuming that they would carry them around.
Have no doubt there will be a "story" by way of explanation - will have to wait till next week to find out.

On the other hand, this maybe attention seeking bullshit
By a bored OAP who is trying to establish his alibi
Why go into so much detail...about nothing?
As the Derbyshire Constabulary seeks;
- the Bolsover Bic Bandit
