The EU ruined Britain? I have news for you. Britain was ruined as a wealthy nation by its engagement in two world wars.
Britain was ruined as a society by greedy industrialists who wished to make a stack while refusing point black to put the necessary investment back into their enterprises. At the same time their employees became as lazy, greedy and essentially stupid as their bosses. Then along came Mrs Thatcher and stopped Britain designing and manufacturing cars and flung whole communities onto the scraphead by closing the coal mines. Society - as the nation had known it before - was abandoned in what George Forsyte might have termed a "vast democratic cheerio". Nothing to do with the EU.
Meanwhile everyone descended into a strange world of celebrity worship, soap opera addiction and illiteracy.
Britain was ruined culturally by the kind of morons who believe Ant and Dec have talent, Cheryl Cole is a singer and Katie Price writes a good book. None of which, I'd hazard, is the fault of the EU either.
In fact, just about the only thing you can blame our fellow Europeans for is that nasty habit they have of learning our language, something that places them at an unfair advantage when it comes to the idea of working in a different country than the one of your birth. We, because we continue to see ourselves as not really European at all, refuse to learn other languages and blame those who learn ours for doing our jobs in this country better and cheaper than us. I mean... the bastards.
And, as it appears to have escaped you, not all Romanians are gypsies any more than all gypsies are Romanians. Come the middle of January, many of those who do join the "first" wave of Romanians and Bulgarians {inverted commas 'cos there are already a lot here anyway, paying taxes, working damn' hard and probably looking after your sick relatives right now} will be working hard at something. Will you?
Your xenophobia is doing you no good. Have it attended to.
Oh, and by the way... a criminal pass is more likely to be found on a football field than in a Romanian Roma's legal history.

GB was once great not any more it's ruined by the EU.
Wow! What a thread Andrew and what a response from 'Locked Out'!
To be honest I have to say that I agree with both of you! I HATE the EU and what it has done to eradicate cultures (not just here but throughout europe) and for the 'one size fits all' mentality that it imposes on us Brits. I do not believe that mixing different cultures/races together in a huge mixing pot does ANY RACE any favours and simply causes division, resentment and racism in the long run. We ALL love somewhere to call home and somewhere where we feel the laws and traditions are tailored to suit us and the whole ethos of the EU deprives us of that...
In all fairness though Andrew, I do think 'Locked Out' makes some powerful points and basically tells us Brits a few 'home truths'. We as a nation have let our guard down, become complacent and allowed those who are prepared to work hard at getting an edge on us push us to the back of our own queue. Greed has also taken over and 'I'm all right Jack' has crushed the community spirit out of many of us. If you look at the things that we as a country/race have done to other cultures/countries over the years I suppose we are now getting our just deserts. Sadly though, as usual, it is the innocent who are getting punished for past sins.
I am NOT a racist but I am a NATIONALIST and I feel that the EU venture is bound eventually to end in disaster. I have nothing against anyone from any part of the world but whenever you get a situation where someone can no longer do in the country of their birth what they want to because of having to consider the vastly differing feelings of various others from other cultures it is never going to work. We have never really gotten on well with the French or The Germans but having to work hard at improving our relationship was akin to 'trying to get on with a family member you didn't gel with' but now, having 'moved into bed with each other' all we face are recriminations, accusations and blame posting because neither of us want the same thing...
England and especially Germany have the best reason ever to get along with each other. We have shared so much pain together and been through a lot of shared experiences. We must learn to love each other for our DIFFERENCES not try to force each other by legislation to act like 'standard europeans'.
I salute you 'Locked in' - wherever you are from even though I hate the truth behind your words.
Love and respect to all,
Tony.

I'm a Nationalist to Tony. The EU have made tax higher, refuse to use coal the cheapest form of energy and there is still loads in the ground. Places like China, India, Indonesia, Russia etc have most pollution. Think we should have a referendum on what energy we should use, still not convinced wind and solar power are the best options the EU tell us what's the best don' they.
The French love France they will stand up for their rights and riot if necessarily, just to protect their pensions, hours, min wage and taxes get increased. Brits just let the Government do what they want and maybe do the odd petition. If more Germans came to the UK which they won't, as Germany is one of the greatest nations maybe the mullet make a come back.
Still think Mike Tyson should be allowed in the UK to promote his book.

Should Germany have one the war? I think things would be slightly different.
We'd likely be all speaking fluent German. The average Miss Scrubber Scrounger, that gets pregnant at 15 (to the local black superstud) would not be happening.
The awful media/press would not rule the Country/minds of Mr/Miss Average Believe What You're Told Thicko Idiot.
Don't get me wrong. No, Nazi lover (The Nazis would of collapsed by now). We may all be Communists (I am anyway).
Mainly because Bureaucrats rule the UK, collect their enormous salaries & sod everyone else. Unfair? Oh, yes.
And Andrew...I sympaphize. I lost my mum, to dozy doctors & equally dozy hospital staff. A hospital that let their staff say (in front of patients) "This place is shit". I don't expect to hear that in a hospital. You didn't hear it, in 1979. Apparently there aren't enough staff in hospitals in 2013 & MRSA is in full swing. Why? Mainly because the cleaners can't speak English & don't know what disenfectant is & the run of the mill staff, are just pissed off, with the NHS low budget & overpayed bureaucrats (again!) And it's not only in Hospitals. It's in shops, factories & just about every industry going.
Going to an interview in 2012. Employer stated to me "We usually employed Polish people". "Oh, sod it" (said moi) "I'm in the wrong Country".
Top hole. Awful Country. Should be totally run by Communists.

Well that's all well and good, Tony {thanks, by the way for your kind words, it makes a welcome change from the usual "you do talk some crap, we built an empire, blah de blah"" response}, But what, I ask you, are you nationalistic for? Some warm beer and cricket on the village green 1950s pipedream , or for the days when the words "made in England" actually meant something other than "shoddily cobbled together using the cheapest imported materials and held together by a bit of plastic, {also imported"}? If the former, I'd advise you to wake up and smell the coffee because it's a myth, if the latter, I have to tell you that I wholeheartedly agree.
As for the charge of the EU eradicating cultures... really? Nation states are incredibly capable of eradicating their own cultures without any help. We had consigned most of our own traditions to the wastebin of history by the 1960s, way before we joined what was then the Common Market. I visit Italy regularly, and in the 80s and 90s regarded Germany as a guaranteed good time. In both countries, their traditional festivals and celebrations are still alive. So please... don't try to tell me that Wassailing sounding like a foreign word to most people, the loss of St. George's Day as anything meaningful, the popular view of folk music as meaningless crap, the wholesale discarding of; traditional trades and crafts, Father Christmas wearing green, seeing in the New Year with a lump of coal and without fireworks, a Christmas that doesn't cost hundreds of quid and involve vast displays of bad taste - the carelessly arranged and garish lighting and light-up Santas, reindeer and sleds adorning altogether too many houses re a god example - , or even the trading of All Hallows' Eve Jack o' Lantern , apple-bobbing et al for a hugely more American version involving sweets, decorations, costumes and "trick or treat" has anything to do with the influence of the EU. All these changes came about because the Great British Public either didn't care about tradition's continued existence or were happy to turn it over lock stock and barrel to the businessmen. The current trend for blaming the EU for the destruction of the "British Way Of Life" has little to do with the reality.
The fact is that the "British Way Of Life" committed suicide when the Brits decided that they'd probably rather be Americans.
So don't get me wrong. I mourn the passing of the British Way Of Life too. But it has gone, and it's our own fault. Our sheer inability to raise any kind of reasonable alternative to EU membership is enough proof for me that continued and closer cooperation with our neighbours {and - just maybe - we begin thinking less of them as "Europeans" and more of ourselves as European - because we've always been Europeans after all...} is the only way forward. If UKiP is the answer, I'm ready to believe that Mary Jane Kelly did that to herself. {See, we have more in common than you thought}

Do you think someone convicted of rape in the UK would be let into America?

COSHH is crucial, if you can't read or understand the instructions it's worrying. German is a easy language to learn, if Germany won the wouldn't be a bad thing in theory.
Communication is crucial in any job if there is a language barrier what you do then ? I seen goods with made in Great Britain, Egypt, Bangladesh, India, Taiwan, China, Germany and USA never seen made in Poland, Spain, Bulgaria, Sweden, Greece list is endless.
Communism always sounds good on paper but in practise it fails. (Animal Farm is still a classic)
NHS should be closed all hospitals need to be private if you can't/won't pay tough shit.
Tyson has always denied the rape, many people don't believe it, some say she was just a typical groupie.

I think Animal farm is about human failings more than anything. We see the same behaviour in all sorts of situations.
*Suppresses a sob at the thought of poor Boxer*
German isn't easy for everyone.
I worked over there a lot in the 70s/80s and unfortunately learned only what was needed to order in sleazy bars and cafes.
