Surprised that no one mentioned this (part 1 was on ITV last night).
Just watched. Always difficult to keep attention when we already know the story and the outcome, but I felt the director did a good job of maintaining the tension.
well we don't really know the outcome do we? ( I believe he did escape to Rhodesia- remember communications were minimal then)
But there comes a time when these great stories- is Hitler alive in Patagonia ?..what happened to Lucan ?..what's Ronnie Biggs up to in Brazil...they just lose their momentum and become passe and boring.
It was very exciting when it happened- I had started a job running a shop near Sloane Square that day and the street was abuzz with drama..sirens and so on. Someone told me that Lady Lucan was a customer but we never saw her in there again.
And the Stephen Ward/Profumo/Keeler/Mandy ("well he would say that, wouldn't he?") is marvellously brought to life on stage (see my review)... exactly how it SHOULD be done as opposed to the TV Lucan; a bad mistake.
The man in a gorilla suit was unfortunate and the author's interviewing the surviving friends of Lucan was awkward, but I thought it was pretty good at portraying that whole gambling set. Closed, self serving and ruthless. Kinnear played the hapless, gambling addicted Lucan well. It will be interesting how they do the second episode. Did he go and live abroad, commit suicide or get done in by his friends because he knew too much about Aspinall and Goldsmiths deeper secrets? Nice car as well. Mercedes 300SEL 6.3.
He would still be arrested on suspicion surely?. The canoeist guy who did a Reggie Perrin act was jailed with his colluding wife for insurance fraud. Was he declared dead?
Lucan's heavy drinking and smoking would have claimed him years ago - unless he is about to do a Ronnie Biggs and come back for the free health service (as he has a right to do being a UK citizen).

I'm not sure if he was, Foz.
He was trying to pretend to be dead, and his wife was claiming the insurance - but not legally declared dead I don't think.
I believe that takes many years - esp when no body has been produced.
But then again ... would the insurance pay-out with no body?
Interesting "twist" in the final part ... claims that Lucan was killed and his body dumped in the English channel as he made his way back to the UK (from Switzerland where he had been hiding).
Aspinall finally realised that standing behind his friend was a dangerous thing to do.
