"...Action Fraud have a recording of that phone call but they will only release it to those who made the call to them on the basis of confidentiality. The Department could confirm at least to itself that all critical information was passed to Action Fraud only if it requests this recording from Action Fraud and checks the recording. Mr Timpson now tells me the Department does not intend to make any such request. This is absurd. A flagship free school, visited and praised effusively by the Prime Minister, has been discovered to have misappropriated and misspent taxpayers' money. There was no police follow up to the investigation that revealed this and the investigation report was not published until a whistleblower went to the press and I and others raised the matter in the House of Commons. It smells to high heaven of a government cover-up.

This smell will only be dispelled with full transparency about the process by which the matter was referred to the police. But your Department is now refusing to ensure that transparency. I urge you to think again.
