Imagine if all shop assistants refused to sell items according to their beliefs and opinions?...

" sorry sir. You will NOT be purchasing that pasty. You are already huge"

"No madam. My conscience wont allow me to sell you that skirt. Not with cellulite like that!"

to the contrary it seems like a sensible and diplomatic idea to me and an obvious solution to a problem.

Why should people be made do something that may offend them when there is an alternative ?..ie : simply ask another assistant to help out ?

or should a gay or lesbian person in the USA be told to 'suck it' and sell Duck Dynasty products even while the person that profits from them has announced they are an abomination ?

this is not PC and is a perfect example of the mis-use of the word- it's a retailer acting humanely and telling it's workers they respect their beliefs.

also why M&S is the success it is.

It seems it was all a mistake and she should have been on the bread counter.

this has of course been mis-reported. It is a policy giving the sales staff the right to pass on a sale to another assistant if it offends their religious beliefs.

can't wait till M&S arrive in Oz as they are soon to.

Oh I am surprised they have left it so long. I only ever go in there once in a blue moon to buy wooly tights.

Muslims should need to be commercial cleaners then, as they have alcohol in chemicals.

If someone refused me to serve due to their religious belief, I say you lost a customer and walk out, why should customers have to wait for another checkout operator ?

I think there is an overreaction to this.

Hasn't everyone been to a Bar Mitzvah or formal Jewish / Muslim event when
Halal or Kosher experts come into the kitchens etc to ensure food is prepared correctly ?

I always don a Kippah if required.

If people have strong religious views isn't it polite to respect them ?

I doubt this is going to play out with assistants grandly storming off- more "let me get someone to help you with that..."

we must resist the urge to join in on Daily Mail/Sun/ etc etc faux outrage.

Is that a royal form of condom?

Personally if you take a job you have to be suitable,so a muslim has to be prepared to sell pork and alcohol in a supermarket. On the same note if I work in a muslim school I would not expect to drink a can of larger with my Sausage roll.

I would be annoyed if I was ushered to another checkout because my shopping offended the cashier. If you can't stand the heat don't go in the kitchen in the first place.

Agree and also if they had to get another cashier to serve someone, it be insulting to the consumer.

silly stuff. Where are these rules of selling ?

you don't have to shop at Marks and Spencer and can take your custom elsewhere. But more fool you if you do over an internal policy that is highly unlikely to affect you in a 100 years.

Stop over-reacting because a business has the good sense to respect it's employees religious beliefs.

and I'll overlook the referring of a religious garment to a sex control device.

I bet JK is secretly either loving this thread or fuming at it. Isn't this whole story and our subsequent posts a HUGE example of how the tabloid press have a way of 'stirring up things' and using the fallout from what they have created to sell newspapers? I could add my own somewhat controversial views on all this just to give the story even more spice and then suddenly someone reacts to that and complains! Then the complaint gets legal and as it gets legal so it gets in the papers and makes for a BIGGER story!

All who care passionately one way or another about the subject matter get hurt and or sued. Many perfectly nice people get dragged into things and are financially ruined and who gains every time? The media.

I may not be 100% convinced that your conviction JK was purely down to the fact that your alleged guilt was a far BIGGER story than your innocence not but I have to say in all fairness that such articles/threads like this ADD significant weight to your argument!
